What is adaptive clothing?

Adaptive clothes are specially designed garments for people who have difficulty dressing themselves, such as individuals with physical disabilities or low mobility, people in wheelchairs, and the elderly. They are intended to make it easier to dress one's self, or to be dressed by a caregiver.

Features of adaptive clothing include:

  • Use of snaps and velcro instead of buttons and zippers, for faster dressing and undressing
  • Open backs allowing dressing in a seated position, or by sliding clothing on from the front and closing at the shoulder
  • Generous use of material to protect the wearer's dignity, such as high-waisted pants for people in wheelchairs
